What to do

Using your pedometer (step counter), keep track of the total number of steps you take each day. You may use your own pedometer or purchase one from us.

Week 1: Simply wear the pedometer and record your steps online. The average daily steps from your first week will be used as your baseline. Your baseline will automatically be calculated for you.

Weeks 2-7:Work from your baseline and set new goals each week to increase the number of steps you take. We recommend that you add 2,000 steps to your baseline for your initial goal!

You can also accumulate "steps" for other physical activities that you participate in, such as cycling, swimming, skiing, weight lifting, yoga, etc. Simply click on the Minutes tab and enter your minutes of activity in the minute box and find your activity in the drop-down list. The equivalent number of steps will be calculated and automatically added to your daily step count.

q Can student participants buy more than one pedometer?

a Yes, pedometers are always available at the Health Promotion Desk downstairs at Hartshorn Health Service. The cost for each additional student pedometer is $5.

q How much does a pedometer cost and where can I get one?

a Pedometers are available to students for only $5 at the Health Promotion desk downstairs at Hartshorn Health Service and also at the Wellness Zone at the Lory Student Center. If you are paying cash or writing a check, please pick up your pedometer at the Health Promotion Desk. The Wellness Zone will have account charge consent forms only.

q What if I don’t have internet access at home?

a Simply jot down your activity minutes and steps on a slip of paper and fill in the online tracking sheet the next time you are at school. In order to complete the program and be eligible for prizes, you must fill in your daily steps and activity online. This can be done from the computer lab at school or anywhere you have online access.

q Is it a requirement for participants to reach 10,000 steps/day in the Steps program?

a No. Walk 4 Wellness is an individualized program that works from your current physical activity level. We recommend setting a goal of 2,000 steps/ day increase from your baseline number (the baseline is the average from the first week). 2,000-2,500 steps = 1 mile. Many pedometer programs set a goal of attaining 10,000 steps /day.

q How do I calculate my stride length?

a Calculation of stride length based on height (This will provide a rough estimate)

Females: Your height x .413 equals your stride length
Males: Your height x .415 equals your stride length

a How do I calculate how many steps are equivalent to a mile?

The steps/mile calculation is based on stride length, and therefore, is also just a rough estimate. First calculate your stride length in inches as explained above. Then divide the number of inches in a mile (1 mile = 63,360 inches) by your stride length in inches.
For example: A female 63 inches tall (5’3”)
63 inches X .413 = 26 inches/step (stride length)
63,360 / 26 = 2437 steps/mile
Another example: A male 70 inches tall (5’10”)
70 inches X .415 = 29 inches/step (stride length)
63,360 / 29 = 2185 steps/mile
